Fizzy Citrus Fruit Slush
A cinch to prepare, bananas (just go with it!), lemon juice and orange juice are mixed together with a simple syrup and frozen.
Mmmm, thinking about and seeing the pictures of this delightfully refreshing fruit slush makes my mouth water.
This is the slush my mom made while I was growing up and I loved the stuff.
I’ve continued to make it, usually serving it around the holidays (Christmas or New Year’s) but this year got me thinking, why on earth do I reserve the beloved, frozen, citrus concoction for holidays only?
I’m hereby changing my ways and am going to make this more often! New Year’s Resolution already. See how goal-oriented I am?
A cinch to prepare, bananas (just go with it!), lemon juice and orange juice are mixed together with a simple syrup and frozen.
The slush is mixed and whipped a few times during the freezing process to incorporate a bit of air making it even more lovingly slushy and wonderful.
The frozen slush is scooped into chilled glasses and topped off with ginger ale.
I like to mash up the slush with the ginger ale, creating an Icee-type (think: 7-Eleven) consistency but my kids just scoop out chunks of the slush and then guzzle the citrus-infused leftover ginger ale. To each his own, I say.
Fizzy Citrus Fruit Slush
Ingredients
- 1 cup (212 g) sugar
- 2 cups water
- 2 cups (about 226 g) mashed bananas, about 4 to 6 very ripe bananas
- ½ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice, from about 2-3 lemons
- 1 (6-ounce) can frozen lemonade, no water added
- 3 cups orange juice
- Ginger ale or another carbonated beverage, for serving
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and water and boil for three minutes.
- Pour into a large bowl and cool completely.
- Add the mashed bananas, lemon juice, frozen lemonade concentrate and orange juice to the cooled syrup. Mix well. Pour into a 9X13-inch pan and cover with plastic wrap or other lid.
- Freeze until slushy, about 2-3 hours (this will depend on your freezer, so check often – you want to mix it before it is frozen solid).
- Use an electric mixer to beat the slush until foamy and aerated (I do it directly in the pan but you can scoop the slush into a large bowl and whip it, if desired, pouring it back into the pan when finished). Repeat this process 1-2 more times during the freezing process, if desired.
- Freeze the slush until firm. When ready to serve, let the pan of slush sit at room temperature for 20-30 minutes.
- Scoop slush into chilled (or not) glasses and top with ginger ale or another preferred carbonated beverage.

Plan to try this… quick question: Have you ever tried to increase the lemon juice/simple syrup instead of using frozen lemonade concentrate? It seems like lemonade concentrate is just lemon juice/sugar – so I wonder if that might work somehow? Thoughts?
Thanks!
No, but it should work out just fine.
I made it without the lemonade concentrate… just upped the amount of lemon juice, sugar, and water. It was good! Reminds me of a frozen fruit concoction my mom makes for company breakfasts..orange juice, bananas, lemon juice, blueberries all mixed together and poured into muffin liners. Served frozen. .
My parents make this every year for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We call it Fizz Appetizer. We serve it with 7up, Sprite or Sierra Mist.
I think this should say frozen lemonade CONCENTRATE, right? I’m sure people have figured it out by now. But just in case… 🙂
what is the frozen lemonade plz and how can i prepare at home
and thx alot mel your blog is important in my life
Anna – you want to keep the slush in the freezer until ready to serve. It will last a month or so in the freezer.
How long would this drink last in the fridge? I might have to halve this recipe since it will only be me drinking it. Thanks!
Cherie – You know, I don’t really know since I’ve never subbed out the bananas. You could always leave them out – it would make the slush less creamy but it would still be delicious and citrusy.
Do you think another fruit could be used instead of the bananas? I have a banana hater in my house (I know, crazy!).
We made a double batch of this for New Years and everyone loved it. I like the idea of having it on hand as a refreshing beverage to make a meal a little more fancy or a snack special (I think it would be great with popcorn on a movie night). Thanks for sharing, Mel.
I tried this on NYE — SO yummy, and a great celebratory bevvy for a non-drinker! Thanks to you and your mom for sharing.
I love this slushy drink – it’s always one I request to make or have made when throwing a bridal or baby shower. It’s so delicious and different than the “usual” punch. Thanks for reminding me of it – I definitely should not just make it for “holidays” or showers, for that matter!
My kids will LOVE this! We’ve been on a smoothy kick for a little over a year now and the “slushiness” of this will appeal to us all! I wish I’d checked into my fav blogs sooner, we could have made it last night to add to our New Year’s Eve treats.
We had this tonight for New Year’s Eve. It was great! We used Sprite since I had some on hand. Thanks for helping me use up the many brown bananas I had this week.
Hi – Just wanted to check the amount of chicken broth in the cheesy broccoli and rice casserole? Four cups seems like a lot with the half and half.
Thanks
Yvonne
That looks so refreshing!!
I can imagine how delicious this tastes! Bookmarked!
Yours sounds good too. I don’t know why this is only made at the holidays either! It is very close to what I make except mine has alcohol in it. It has 9 cups of water and 2 cups sugar, bring to a boil. Add 4 green tea bags, let sit until cool. Add to mixture (1) can frozen OJ, (1) can frozen lemonade (I use rasp. pink lemonade), 2 cups brandy, or whiskey, or slow gin, or rum. (I use rum). Put in lg container, stir occasionally until slushie. I would imagine no alcohol would have to be use to make non-alcoholic drink. I prefer to use ginger ale or sour soda in mine, or 7-up. Made mine for Christmas and its gone! Will have to make a double batch next year for company!
Mel – this brings back wonderful summer memories at my Gramma’s house. She made this, but her recipe had pineapple juice in it along with the other juices….YUMMMM!
See you next year, Mel! Thanks for providing us with so many lovely recipes. (And hopefully with a picture of your baby girl next year ;))
This slush looks so refreshing, Mel! I agree with you…why is that we only make certain recipes during the holidays? This looks like a recipe my family would enjoy often…thanks for sharing!
